Born on July 16, 1992, in Crawley, West Sussex, UK, Erin Rachel Doherty grew up with her older sister in the same town. When Erin was just four years old, her parents got divorced. She found her passion for acting while attending Hazelwick School. She and her sister went to Sunday acting courses when she was younger.

Childhood and education

Doherty was also a huge football lover and learned to ice skate at an early age. She was so driven that she aspired to play professionally herself. Her parents, however, made it apparent to her that she would have to choose. She ultimately chose to pursue acting after performing in a Bosnian theater festival in 2010. She attended the Guildford School of Acting for a year after high school graduation before getting accepted to Bristol’s Old Vic Theatre School. Erin earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting from that institution between 2012 and 2015.

After minor supporting roles, she played Princess Anne in the Netflix historical series The Crown between 2019 and 2020. In 2025, she landed a guest role in the Netflix series The Adolescence. In July of that year, Erin received an Emmy Award nomination for her performance.

The Coronation Street actress admitted that she hit rock bottom at the beginning of the coronavirus quarantine, which led to a sudden halt in her career. However, she found a positive activity by juggling several balls. The new hobby helped her improve her mental health and gave her a new focus.

The actress told Grazia magazine: “I learnt to juggle. It kept me mentally healthy. I just needed something to focus on.” The 28-year-old actress is sure she would have gone crazy otherwise. “Chloe, a play about obsession, betrayal, identity, and bereavement, was written by Alice Seabright, director of Sex Education. Becky, played by Dougherty, continues to live with her mother and works part-time to support herself. She frequently contrasts her life on Instagram with the purportedly ideal lives of others.
